A lot of familiar faces were missing from this year’s game, with first-timers and other young players taking their places. The WNBA announced a new television contract with ESPN/ABC on Sunday in a landmark deal that will give the league rights fees for the first time. The eight-year deal, which will also include rights for digital media, will begin in 2009 and go through the league’s 20th season in 2016. The current six-year contract expires at the end of next season.

The Eastern Conference lost the first six WNBA All-Star games before breaking through with a victory last year. Now, the East wants to establish its own streak in the midseason contest set for Sunday. “Of course, you always want to win, especially in the All-Star game, especially when you know you only won one,” Detroit’s Deanna Nolan said.
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice commended the WNBA All-Stars for their perseverance and achievement, and encouraged them to get involved in global initiatives for health, poverty and social equality. Rice was the keynote speaker Friday at the league’s second annual “All-Star Salute: Inspiring Women Luncheon” and received the 2007 WNBA Inspiration Award.
Lindsay Whalen had 22 points and eight assists and Connecticut outlasted Sacramento 82-78 in overtime Thursday night. Whalen hit a layup with 2.8 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period, and the Sun (9-11) finished off a four-game Western road swing with their third straight win. Nykesha Sales topped all scorers with 23 for Connecticut.

The Indiana Fever entered the All-Star break playing like champions. The Fever won a franchise-record fifth consecutive game, 79-63 over the New York Liberty on Thursday night. Indiana (15-4) enters the weekend with the league’s best record. The Fever avoided the natural tendency to relax going into the break leading up to Sunday’s All-Star game.
The San Antonio Silver Stars on Thursday announced forward Erin Buescher will miss the rest of the 2007 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.
