The Bruins hired Jim Benning as assistant general manager and Don Sweeney as director of hockey operations and player development Saturday. Benning takes over for Jeff Gorton, who was fired June 27 after Boston missed the playoffs for a second straight year. The Bruins recently fired first-year coach Dave Lewis and replaced him with Claude Julien.
The first time Jeff Vanderbeek listened to Brent Sutter, the Devils’ owner knew he was the right man to return New Jersey to glory. The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed right wing Bill Thomas and goaltender David LeNeveu to one-year contracts Friday and signed free-agent left wing Tomas Survoy to a one-year pact. Thomas, 24, had eight goals and six assists in 24 games for the Coyotes last season along with 13 goals and 20 assists for their AHL affiliate in San Antonio.
The Ottawa Senators signed free agent Niko Dimitrakos to a one-year contract on Friday. Dimitrakos, a 28-year-old right winger, has 24 goals and 62 points in 158 regular-season games over parts of four seasons with San Jose and Philadelphia. The Atlanta Thrashers signed free agent center Alexandre Giroux to a multiyear deal Friday. The 26-year-old Giroux had two goals and two assists in nine games with the Washington Capitals last season. Giroux also played in 67 games with Hershey of the American Hockey League, recording a career-high 70 points (42 goals, 28 assists).

Sidney Crosby signed a five-year contract extension worth about $45 million that will keep the NHL MVP with the Pittsburgh Penguins through the 2012-13 season. The three-year contract Crosby signed as a rookie lasts through the coming season. The extension keeps him under contract for the next six seasons.
Forwards Jeremy Reich and Matt Hendricks agreed to contracts Monday with the Boston Bruins. Reich has played two seasons in the Bruins’ organization, dividing time last season between Boston and its minor league affiliate in Providence, R.I. In 32 games for Boston, the left wing had one assist and 83 penalty minutes.
Bill Guerin’s young daughter yelled with delight when a picture of her goal-scoring father appeared on a big television screen. The 36-year-old right winger had nearly the same reaction moments later when he saw the ‘C’ on his brand-new Islanders jersey.
