Angels hit 3 3-run HRs, rip Yankees (AP)

Los Angeles Angels' Vladimir Guerrero, right, is greeted by Chone Figgins as he approaches home plate after hitting a three-run home run against the New York Yankees during the sixth inning of a baseball game Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Yankee Stadium in New York. The Angels won 12-6.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia knew his team was due to break out. The stats were on his side. Torii Hunter had a more primal explanation for Los Angeles' recent surge. Hunter, Vladimir Guerrero and Juan Rivera each hit a three-run homer, and the Angels added to their East Coast romp with a 12-6 win over the New York Yankees on Thursday night.

S Lynch, Broncos agree to amicably split (AP)

Denver Broncos safety John Lynch takes a break on the field during the opening day of training camp at the team's headquarters in southeast Denver on Friday, July 25, 2008. The Broncos officials announced on Thursday, July 31, 2008, that Lynch was being allowed by the team to explore other options.

John Lynch wasn't content playing a part-time role, not after four straight Pro Bowl seasons. The Denver Broncos couldn't promise him the playing time he was seeking. So Lynch and the Broncos agreed to amicably separate. "He wants to play every down," coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday. "Heck, I can't blame him.

Retief Goosen, a late arrival and an early starter, took advantage of a Firestone South course that played long and short on his way to a 4-under 66 that gave him a one-shot lead in the Bridgestone Invitational on Thursday. One year after Tiger Woods was the only player to break par, Goosen and 32 other players in the 80-man field met only minor resistance on a balmy afternoon at this World Golf…

Favre ready for camp, Goodell yet to act (AP)

In this Jan. 20, 2008 file photo, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre looks on during the NFC Championship football game against the New York Giants in Green Bay, Wis. With Favre's standoff with the Green Bay Packers still simmering, Aaron Rodgers took his place as the starting quarterback in the team's first training camp practice Monday, July 28, 2008.

Brett Favre's agent says the three-time MVP understands he would be walking into a media frenzy by showing up for the Green Bay Packers' training camp, but he's willing to deal with that rather than have retirement forced on him. "He's prepared to deal with it," James "Bus" Cook told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Federer loses again, may be out as No. 1 (AP)

Nikolay Davydenko, of Russia, takes a breath while waiting for a ball during a match with Carlos Moya, of Spain, that was continued from Wednesday night at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters tennis tournament, Thursday, July 31, 2008 in Mason, Ohio. Moya won 7-6 (8), 4-6, 6-2.

Roger Federer lost another three-set match and, perhaps, his longtime grip on No. 1. The world's top-ranked player had another out-of-character defeat on Thursday, a 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (7) loss to Ivo Karlovic that left the Croat exulting on his back and opened the way for Rafael Nadal to take over the No.
