Elton Brand and Corey Maggette have told the Los Angeles Clippers they will opt of the final year of their contracts and become free agents. "We have been notified by Elton Brand and Corey Maggette of each player's decision to opt out of his respective contract," Clippers president Andy Roeser said Monday in a statement.

Mark DeRosa and Ted Lilly got the Chicago Cubs back on track — DeRosa with two fine swings and Lilly with another impressive outing. DeRosa hit a grand slam and also a two-run homer to match his career high with six RBIs, Lilly pitched eight shutout innings and the Cubs ended a four-game skid with a 9-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

No punches, no angry words exchanged. With first place on the line in the AL East, the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox stuck to playing baseball Monday night. James Shields scattered five hits over 6 1-3 innings and B.J. Upton and Gabe Gross homered, helping the Rays remain unbeaten at home against the Red Sox with a 5-4 victory that hiked their lead to 1 1/2 games in the division.

Golden State point guard Baron Davis elected to become a free agent Monday night, opting out of the final year of his contract with the Warriors in a surprise move. Davis had until Monday night to decide whether to turn down his $17.8 million contract for next season, the final year of a six-year deal.

Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera left the game against Minnesota on Monday night because of a tight left hip flexor. Cabrera hobbled a little after he reached to his left and dropped a low throw from third baseman Carlos Guillen in the second inning. He is listed as day-to-day. Clete Thomas pinch-hit for Cabrera in the third inning.
Indiana University's president told the NCAA infractions committee that the hiring of ousted basketball coach Kelvin Sampson was "a risk that should not have been taken." President Michael McRobbie told the committee during a private session on June 14 that Sampson had betrayed the school's trust in violating NCAA regulations on telephone calls to recruits.
